Nineteenth-century Chinese bamboo food container, skillfully constructed from woven bamboo strips with wooden bases, each tier lined in dark lacquer to protect against moisture. Features two to four stacking compartments held secure by side frames and an elegant arched overhead handle, often finished with brass or bronze hardware accented by delicate flower-shaped plates.
Originally designed as a portable carrier for celebratory occasions—transporting pastries, meats, and rice to family gatherings, temples, and wedding ceremonies. The tiered system allowed for organised separation of different dishes, making it an essential piece of domestic life in late nineteenth-century China.
A beautiful example of functional craftsmanship, this container bears the graceful patina of age and use. Ideal for display or as an authentic decorative accent that honours its heritage purpose.
